GOES GVAR User Notification: MBCC to be Operational Nov 24th > ==================================================== The Midnight Blackbody Calibration Correction (MBCC) will be made operational on November 24, 2003, at 1550Z for GOES-10 and 1830Z for GOES-12. Users will see effects in their data in the periods around satellite midnight - -0200Z to 0800Z for GOES-12, and 0600Z to 1200Z for GOES-10. MBCC corrects the detrimental effect of solar heating on the GOES Imager calibration around local midnight. Once the MBCC is operational, users will notice an increase in observed brightness temperatures near local midnight, primarily in channel 2 (3.8 um), but also to a lesser extent in the longer- wavelength channels. The maximum increases will be approximately 1K in channel 2 (typical change: 0.5K), and much less in the other channels. For a detailed description of the midnight calibration errors and the correction algorithm refer to the NOAA OSD Web Site. There you will find the following paper: Implementation of Midnight Blackbody Calibration Correction (MBCC) by M. Weinreb, D. Han, and J. Johnson (Rev 8/7/03). The NOAA OSD Web Site is found at: www.osd.noaa.gov. To access the MBCC information on the web site, click on "GVAR Download" on the left side of the page, and enter your e-mail address as requested. If you have not previously registered, you will have to enter some basic information for registration. By doing this you get e-mail notification of GVAR updates and related information. From the GVAR Download page there is a link to the Imager and Sounder Calibration page where additional information is available. -- Linwood Hegele, Computer Sciences Corporation In Support of: NOAA/NESDIS/Office of Systems Development (OSD) ph: (301) 457-5193/5220 (ext 168) fax: (301) 457-5722 e-mail: Lin.Hegele@noaa.gov --------------------------------------------------------------- Posted to the NOAASIS 1230 UTC, 10 November 2003
